Vienna, Austria

Belvedere Palace
For the past few days we have enjoyed comfortable weather temperatures for touring around the city. Today we experienced a few rain showers towards the end of the day but we were able to see a good amount despite the inclement weather. First we headed over to the Belvedere palace, which was the summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy. Just like many other palaces and buildings throughout Vienna, the Baroque style is evident throughout the entirety of the complex. Although we did not tour inside, I do know that it houses one of Europe’s most important museums. However, we did venture around the perimeter of the property, which includes the gardens and (now empty) fountains. The white statues and vegetation designs make for a beautiful site.

Our next stop was to the magnificent Schonbrunn Palace, which together with the side buildings, park, and gardens is one of the most important cultural monuments in Austria. The history of the palace alone is enough to be impressed by. After snapping a few photos from the outside, we hurried in to the lobby to purchase a “grand tour ticket”. With this we were able to use headset devices and listen to the history and stories of each room in the palace. The tour of the imperial apartments took us on a journey through the centuries. We traveled through time learning about Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife, Elisabeth and ended the tour looking at the richly decorated apartments once occupied by Maria Theresa. Taking a tour of this palace was a great way to escape the rain and learn more about early Austrian history.

After taking a tram and a couple Ubahn trains back to the First District in Vienna we grabbed a quick bite to eat on the street. For some reason I cant seem to escape the craving for Austrian street food! This time around we

stopped at the Wurstal Stand and had a taste of the large sausage/hotdog placed in a delicious bun.  Needless to say I will not be hungry for awhile…
To escape the rain we relaxed inside a little lounge/cafĂ© called Pick Wicks, which serves food as well as beverages. It was nice to relax on the couches and rest after nonstop sightseeing for days.
