Vienna, Austria

SKATING! This wonderful winter sport can be found next to Vienna’s Rathausplatz (City Hall). There is an annual skating event called Wiener Eistram (Vienna Ice Dream) that starts in mid January and lasts until early March. The skating complex includes more than 4,000 square meters of ice surface. There are two circular rinks that form the bulk of the skating area and they are connected by multiple ice trails that wind through the neighboring Rathaus Park.

Various food and drink vendors border the ice rinks for convenient refreshment while skating. Traditional Austrian winery and beer hall food is served along with hot-spiced wines. Gourmet sausages, potato mish-mashes, waffles, pastries, and breads are a great treat after skating. Dom advised that we try the Kaiserschmarrn, which is one of the best-known Austrian desserts. Kaiserschmarrn is a light, carmaleized pancake made from a sweet batter. The pancake is then split into pieces while frying, shredded after preparation, usually sprinkled with powdered sugar, and served hot with apple or plum sauce. It was delicious!

The Rathaus building itself covers only some 20,000 square meters and the rest of the total 130,000 square meters, is occupied by a square park – the “Rathauspark”. The Rathaus is a place where the city’s council meets and also the mayor of Vienna.

Coming to this area at night was a great experience and we had a wonderful time!
